1 Networks and Productivity : Causal
نویسندگان
چکیده
Using detailed publication and citation data for over 50,000 articles from 30 major economics and finance journals, we investigate whether network proximity to an editor influences research productivity. During an editor’s tenure, his current university colleagues publish about 100% more papers in the editor’s journal, compared to years when he was not editor. In contrast to editorial nepotism, such “inside” articles have significantly higher ex post citation counts, even when same-journal and self-cites are excluded. Our results thus suggest that despite potential conflicts of interest faced by editors, personal associations are used to improve selection decisions. * We have benefited from discussions with Kenneth Ahern, Malcolm Baker, Jay Hartzell, Han Kim, Richard Ruback, Jeremy Stein, Paul Tetlock, Allan Timmerman, Sheridan Titman, and especially Adolfo de Motta. We also thank seminar participants at Harvard, UCSD Economics, Florida State, New York University, University of Oklahoma, UC Riverside, Penn State and the University of Washington. The Short and Long Run Causality between Agglomeration and Productivity
This study is to investigate the short- and long-run causal relationship between agglomeration (localization and urbanization) economies and labor productivity in the manufacturing sector of 28 Iranian provinces over an 11-year period, 2001–2011. Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) method was used to estimate our long-run panel data model. The empirical findings suggested that localiz...

متن کاملNatural Selection and Causal Productivity
In the recent philosophical literature, two questions have arisen concerning the status of natural selection: 1) Is it a population-level phenomenon, or is it an organism-level phenomenon? 2) Is it a causal process, or is it a purely statistical summary of lower-level processes? In an earlier work (Millstein 2006), I argue that natural selection should be understood as a population-level causal...

متن کاملDetermining the best irrigation water scheduling with the aim of maximum productivity in irrigation and drainage networks (Case study: Qazvin irrigation network)
In this study, a model was developed to determine the optimal irrigation schedule for the Qazvin Plain in such a way that economic productivity is maximized with the amount of water available and the area under cultivation. The AquaCrop plant growth model was used to determine crop performance in different irrigation programs. The plant growth model was connected to the MATLAB programming envir...
